Celebrating 10 Years of the Night Ninjas

Ten years ago, the Night Ninjas began in the simplest way possible — a couple of mates heading out for a Thursday night run after the kids were in bed. No committee. No clubrooms. No grand plan. Just a shared love of running, a few headlamps, and what became known as the “Ninja Loop.”

What started from the driveway of a Hibiscus Coast home quickly became something much bigger.

First there were five runners.

Then came the group chat.

Soon there were dozens of people turning up regularly, drawn not just by the running, but by the atmosphere — supportive, welcoming, inclusive, and genuinely fun.

Fast forward ten years, and the Night Ninjas have evolved into one of the fastest-growing and most recognisable running communities in Auckland, now an affiliated athletics club with more than 200 members.

The story of the Night Ninjas is not really about kilometres, race medals, or finish times — although there have been plenty of those. It is about people.

From the very beginning, the club built its identity around inclusiveness. Whether someone was training for their first 5km, walking to improve their health, chasing a marathon PB, or preparing for a 200km ultra, everyone was welcomed equally. The club’s philosophy — “From couch to 200k, ParkRun to New Zealand Champs” — perfectly captures what the Night Ninjas became known for.

The growth happened organically because the culture was authentic.

People invited friends. Friends brought family. New runners discovered confidence. Experienced runners found community. Training partners became lifelong mates. The orange singlets started appearing everywhere — at local parkruns, Auckland road races, trail events, marathons, ultras, and even international events.

As the years passed, the club expanded far beyond that original Thursday night loop. Weekly runs were added across the Hibiscus Coast, catering for every pace and ability. Structured workouts, social runs, long runs, trail adventures, beginner-friendly sessions, and community events became part of the rhythm of the club.

The Night Ninjas eventually became officially affiliated with Athletics New Zealand and Athletics Auckland — a significant milestone that reflected just how far the club had come from those humble beginnings.

But while the club grew in size and reputation, the original spirit never disappeared.

The camaraderie remained the heartbeat of the Ninjas.

Ask almost any member why they stay, and the answers are always similar: the friendships, the encouragement, the banter, the support during tough training blocks,
the coffee afterwards, the shared suffering on hills and long runs, and the feeling that no one runs alone.

Over the past decade, Night Ninjas athletes have achieved incredible results. Members have stood on podiums at major marathons, tackled some of the world’s toughest ultra-distance races, represented the club nationally, and inspired countless others along the way.

Yet perhaps the club’s greatest achievement cannot be measured by medals or race times.

It is the hundreds of people whose lives have changed because they simply turned up to a run one evening.

Some arrived nervous and unsure if they belonged.
Some were rebuilding confidence.
Some were looking for fitness.
Some were searching for connection.

Many found far more than they expected.

Ten years on, the Night Ninjas stand as proof that extraordinary things can grow from very ordinary beginnings. A couple of dads sneaking out for a run after bedtime sparked a movement that has become a cornerstone of the local running community.

To every runner, walker, volunteer, supporter, coach, and Ninja who has been part of the journey — thank you.

Here’s to the friendships formed, the miles shared, the finish lines crossed, and the next chapter of the Night Ninjas story.

Happy 10 years, Ninjas. 🧡🥷.
